Mari, winning his sixth Palio, is king of
the square for now, while Atzeni must
suffer the ignominy of finishing second, a
position in Palio lore which is worse than
coming in last. Emotions are still running
high in the Piazza del Campo, where sever-
al post-race brawls break out between ri-
val contrade. Gradually the mood simmers
a little to make way for a return to the
street parties of the night before across
every district of Siena.
Some will drink to remember, others to
forget, but every contrada member will
eventually go, with the perpetual dream
of returning victorious.
