GETTING THERE:
Siena is roughly halfway between Florence
and Rome—less than two hours' drive from
either—and most direct flights from the
USA land in Rome. To explore fully the
stunning Tuscan countr yside, a hire car
is essential but the Italian rail network
is also reliable and inexpensive. Many of
the hotels in Siena will arrange packages
which include seats or a balcony view for
the Palio, but it's best to book early. You
can find advice on staying outside the city
alongside the feature on La Foce.
For videographer Patty Wolfe's lighthearted
take on the Palio, read her story in the
August 16 TDN, here.
