I answered a call that I thought came from my
nancial institution, but it was a scammer. I gave
out some personal information. What do I do now?
W hen it comes to phone scams, prevention is key. If you think you have
already fallen victim to a scam, take these steps to protect yourself and
your information.
1. Call your credit union or credit card compa ny i m med i ate ly. L et you r
financial institutions know of any fishy activity right away. ey'll likely issue
you a new card and investigate the fraudulent charges.
2. Check your accounts and change your passwords. Change all passwords and
PINs, even on cards that you don't think have been compromised.
3. Report the scam. Start with reporting the scam to your local
police. e A ARP Fraud Watch Network also has a hotline
available, w ith volunteers ready to advise you about your
next steps.
4. Monitor your statements and credit reports.
Charges can appear on your card months after your
information has been compromised. Sign up to receive
alerts about account activity.
