OptiBiotix secures US partnership for probiotic YORK, UK—OptiBiotix Health— a biotechnology manufacturer that develops compounds targeting obe- sity, diabetes, and high cholesterol— has secured a licensing partnership with an unnamed US-based pharma- ceutical company to develop its LPLDL (Lactobacillus plantarum) probi- otic as a biotherapeutic pharmaceuti- cal product. The agreement grants the partner exclusivity to the blood pres- sure and cholesterol reducing probi- otic in the US pharmaceutical market with the option to expand worldwide. The deal is OptiBiotix's first licensing partnership for this probiotic product outside the food and food supple- ments market. USDA deregulates Nuseeds plant- based omega-3 ALSIP, IL—The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) h a s d e r e g u l a t e d a p r o p r i e t a r y omega-3 canola supplied by Nufarm subsidiary, Nuseed, for cultivation in the US. Developed in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation a n d t h e G r a i n s R e s e a r c h a n d Development Corporation, this omega-3 canola is the first plant- based source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. This product could relieve pressure on wild fish stocks, where these types of fatty acids are currently sourced. The USDA deregulation is a s t e p t o w a r d g l o b a l r e g u l a t o r y approval of the company's omega-3 canola. Nuseed's FDA submission is being processed, and approval is anticipated prior to the 2019 US cropping season. Aker BioMarine partners with LRA to study krill-oil effects on lupus METUCHEN, NJ—Aker BioMa- rine and Lupus Research Alliance (LRA), New York, NY, launched a clinical study to investigate how phospholipid-rich krill oil can lessen the symptoms associated with lupus. The study involves 76 patients diag- nosed with lupus from 20 research c e n t e r s t h a t w i l l b e r a n d o m l y assigned to take either a daily dose of phospholipid-rich krill oil or a placebo for six months, followed by another six months where both groups are given krill oil. The results of the study are expected in 2020. Ribus to launch clean-label- focused industry group ST. LOUIS, MO—Ribus, a func- tional ingredient manufacturer, will officially launch the Clean Label Alli- ance (CLA) on November 9 at this year's SupplySide West show in Las Vegas, NV. In addition to Ribus, the group includes Biogrund, Bosch Packaging Technology, Lonza, and Natoli Engineering. The purpose of this industry group is to assist and guide dietary supplement companies in efficiently producing clean-label supplements by providing resources and solutions from industry leaders. The CLA will offer confidential clean label consultations that eliminate the guesswork for developing clean label supplements. These consultations are free to contract or branded manufac- turers, and requests can be submitted through www.cleanlabelalliance. com. After submitting a request, cus- tomers will also have access to clean label manufacturing resources and technical support. At the same trade show, Ribus will also launch Nu-Bind, a clean label excipient and the company's sixth product launch. Nu-Bind is a natural alternative to synthetic and plasti- cized binders, allowing nutraceutical manufacturers to formulate clean label, certified organic tablets. The natural binder is comprised of guar gum, gum arabic, agave fiber, rice hulls, and agave syrup. Nu-Bind can replace HPC, PVP, HPMC, PEG, pregelatinized starch, and gelatin in tablet formulations and is available as a conventional or organic ingredient. SIDI releases updated protocol W A S H I N G T O N , D C — T h e Standardized Information on Dietary Ingredients (SIDI) work group—the supplement industry's self-regulatory coalition comprised of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, and the United Natural Products Alliance—published an updated version of the SIDI proto- col. The document provides a stan- dardized format for dietary ingredi- e n t s u p p l i e r s t o c o m m u n i c a t e regulatory and quality information on their ingredients and facilities to manufacturers. The updated proto- col features templates of dietary ingredient datasheets, a site quality overview, and additional examples of the type of dietary ingredient infor- mation that could be offered, includ- ing safety studies, history of safe use data, and information on sourcing and sustainability. The updated SIDI protocol is available at www.SIDI workgroup.com. Major tuna, algae omega-3 players focus on developing new products DUBLIN, Ireland—The global markets for tuna omega-3 ingredi- ents and algae omega-3 ingredients are expected to grow at compound annual rates of 4.1 and 11.6 percent respectively through 2023, accord- ing to a report by Research and Markets. Pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, and animal nutrition are the fastest growing markets for algae-based omega-3. The report identifies DSM, Archer Daniels Midland, SeaDragon, Olvea Fish Oils, ImperialOel, Clover, and Lysi as major players that have focused on developing novel products and creating partnerships.
