DR: I grew up a UK fan. TDN: UK fan or Louisville fan? DR: There are a lot of UK fans in Louisville. When Rick (Pitino) came to U of L, I became a U of L fan. Now that he's not there anymore I'm in purgatory. It was very mixed between the two where I grew up. It was never contentious. We just had fun with it and they both had a lot of good teams when I was growing up in the '70s and '80s. TDN: That's surprising since you grew up in Louisville? DR: Allen Jerkens. He was my good friend. He was also one of the best people I've ever met. He's one of the few people I know who never had an enemy and genuinely wanted everyone to do well. He was also a maverick. He did things differently from other people. He did it his way and he never changed. The best advice he gave me is never try to conform to what other people do. TDN: The person, past or present, whom you admire most in racing?
