March/April 2019 I 17 LaserWave ® FLEX WideBand (OM5) Multimode Optical Fiber www.ofsoptics.com THE FUTURE Building intelligence is a dynamic process. The evolution extends beyond the understanding of what an IB is capable of on day one. It continues as the occupants interact with the connected building systems and as the systems adjust to occupants. Intelligence is furthered through use of the analyzed data only available through the interconnected systems and continues during future systems integration. According to Harry Smeenk, senior vice president of technology programs at TIA, "Smart buildings will create a scalable foundation for creating the elusive smart city, building by building from the ground up." 1 Designing for intelligence, ICT professionals can position a building at any level of intelligence to more easily enable connectedness. Mindful of how topology, pathway and telecom- munications space decisions impact the building, ICT designers can leave a flexible platform for future building owners, operators, and occupants to enjoy.
