the esl writer's handbook,
2nd edition
Janine Carlock, Maeve Eberhardt,
Jaime Horst, & Lionel Menasche
The ESL Writer's Handbook is a reference work for
ESL students who are taking college-level courses. Its
purpose is to provide help with the broad variety of
writing questions students may have when working
on academic assignments. Unlike other handbooks
on the market, this book's sole purpose is to address
the issues of second language learners; all samples
feature the work of L2 learners.
The spiral-bound Handbook complements a student
writer's dictionary, thesaurus, and grammar reference.
It would be suitable as a text for an advanced ESL writ-
ing course when used with the companion Workbook.
The new edition features significant revisions to Sections
3 and 4; in particular, both APA and MLA style guides
have been updated and new sample papers for each
are included. The new edition includes new and revised
exercises and many new samples of student writing.

information literacy
A Guide to Finding and
Evaluating Sources
Janine Carlock
This book can be used as a guide in university writing
classes or as the main text in information literacy
classes. It will provide students with knowledge of
the basics of information literacy—how to get good
key words, how to use them effectively in a data-
base, how to evaluate what they've found and how to
use sources ethically—and, more important, how to
provide the opportunity to practice using information
literacy skills in a relevant way.
Information literacy is a complex interaction of ways of
interacting with information including:
• knowledge about the world of information (content
frame)
• a set of competencies or skills (competency frame)
• a way of learning (learning to learn frame)
• contextual and situated social practices (personal
relevance frame)
• power relationships in society and social responsi-
bility (social impact frame).
