"Definitely, I'm inspired by other artists.
A key influence of mine has been Alfred
Munnings, a very famous equine artist. His
colors are just incredible. If you ever see a
Munnings painting, he'll use this brilliant
green where you wouldn't expect it, and he's
been influenced by the impressionists – Van
Gogh, Cézanne, etc. – as I was.
"I try to play around with negative space
too – areas that aren't painted. I think it
helps to engage the viewer with the painting
and to trick their eye. So I'll just leave the
background without any detail, but I'll try to
suggest something with color or movement.
I love the interaction between the experience
you can get from looking at a painting and
the way the mind reacts, like it tries to make
sense of something when two colors hit and
suggest in your brain an image. Except there
isn't one. It's another element to it.
