A life-long interest in communications made
Suzanne Waring first a college instructor
and then a writer. She lives in Great Falls
and writes about Montana people and
their communities.
"We teach the pups to work on either the le or right side because
we want the dogs to be comfortable on either side of a person
depending on needs," said Monroe. "For instance, the forever
owner might be disabled on one side." An interesting command is
"lap." If owners are wheelchair bound, they might not be able to
reach out. e dog comes onto the owner's lap with the needed
item in its mouth. e volunteers teach the pup to walk backward
so the two of them can get into a tight place, such as a bathroom
stall. e dog learns to get into the car when it hears "car." For
the hearing impaired, the dogs alert owners to alarms, doorbells,
phones, and other people.
I started out doing this volunteering for the puppies; I do it
now for the people," said Monroe. "I can't imagine not doing this.
Raising puppies is a part of who I am."
