HOW BIG IS BIG? First developed in 1956 by Charles Fraser and incorporated into the Town of Hilton Head in 1983, Hilton Head Island is the largest barrier island on the southeast coast. It's 12 miles long, 5 miles wide, encompasses 42 square miles and was the very first eco-planned resort destination in the United States.
