Introduction
Retirement is a relatively new concept. In terms of human
history, retirement is still in its infantile state. Until recently, if
you were still living, you were still working. This concept began
to change in the mid to late 1800s when companies and
governments began to offer pensions and security nets. In
1881, Prussia became the first country to propose the then
radical concept of government support for those who had
aged out of the workforce.
Similar to all new ideas, the concept of retirement has evolved
and changed drastically since its inception. We have witnessed
over the past 100 plus years two world wars, two major global
recessions, unimaginable leaps in medical science and
technology, and a drastic increase in life expectancy.
