VISIT US AT BICSI Las Vegas Booth # 1 4 4 1 ICT BICSI sep-oct 2018.indd 1 7/29/2019 11:09:10 AM Many classroom AV systems can be accommodated by a single AV source extended to a single display or projector. This simple solution reduces complexity, unplanned maintenance, and end-user confusion. Wi-Fi and 5G To keep up with the never-ending need for speed and user expectations for wireless connectivity, Wi-Fi standards and technology have also been rapidly advancing. For HD AV signals, the 60 GHz WiGig protocols promise to support the kinds of bandwidth needed at 10 to 20 Gb/s. The initial protocol IEEE 802.11ad—theoretically sup- porting about 7 Gb/s—will be surpassed by the proposed 802.11ay standard intended to support at least 20 Gb/s and longer distances. While the theoretical bandwidth promises a more appealing wireless transport system for HD AV signals, the high-frequency microwave radio signals of 802.11ad and 802.11ay prove to be extremely limited to line-of- sight applications. This may not be an issue for AV appli- cations within a conference room or classroom. However, 5G digital cellular networks may provide an alternative to Wi-Fi or WiGig in the future, providing the ability to deliver ubiquitous 10 Gb/s data rates anywhere devices are taken. With a proposed low 1 millisecond network latency, future 5G technology could be used in many environments for streaming HD video signals, although it may be many years before we see the true promise of 5G on a large scale. By focusing on simplicity and ease of use, network installers and IT managers can provide system longevity, reliable perfor- mance, and end-user satisfaction. Such systems offer straightforward installa- tions, stress-free set-ups with no pro- gramming required, and cost-effective technology upgrades accomplished via simple alterations to the signal extenders with no change to the network infra- structure needed. These solutions can even be added to an existing certified permanent link, reducing labor costs and installation time.
