magine life in the late 1890s. Cascade had recently
been established. Cowboy Charlie Russell married here
and was reinventing himself as an artist. "Stagecoach
Mary" Fields, the first black woman delivering mail
for the U.S. Postal Service, ran a route from Cascade to
St. Peter's Mission with a horse and mule team. It was
the Wild West.
Today, the town of 700 maintains a sturdy sensibility.
Square Bue still heralds your arrival from the east and
north, and the Missouri River snakes through town—
cale grazing on the banks and anglers boating down the
middle. Eagles and osprey patrol the sky while pronghorn
and mule deer try to escape notice. Folks wave as you
walk or drive through town. Welcome to Cascade.
