ajor Appliance and Refrigeration Technology (MART)
students from 10 states recently participated in the
National Leadership and Skills Conference and MART
SkillsUSA National Championships. The invitation-only event
was for career and technical student first-place state medalists
in 102 competition areas. It is the largest skill competition in
the world.
The SkillsUSA National Championships, held in Louisville, KY,
took place June 26-27, 2019 as part of SkillsUSA's 55th annual
National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), a showcase
of career and technical education. More than 6,400 outstanding
career and technical education students took part during the
week. All of the state contest winners competed hands-on in
103 different trade, technical and leadership fields, one of which
was the Major Appliance and Refrigeration Technology contest.
"The MART National Technical Committee members are very
proud of the contestants' accomplishments," said Greg Doster
chairman of the MART National Technical Committee. "All of the
students are true champions in their dedication to excellence in
their trade, and in their leadership skills."
During the national competition, the students worked against
the clock, proving their expertise in occupations such as major
appliance and refrigeration technology, electronics, computer-
aided drafting, precision machining, medical assisting, culinary
arts and 95 other areas. In addition, leadership contestants
demonstrated their skills, including extemporaneous speaking
and conducting meetings by parliamentary procedure.
The Major Appliance and Refrigeration Technology contestants
rotated from station to station diagnosing common service issues
on refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, microwave ovens and
