Sporting Classics' Awards of Excellence ron spomer Rifles – Merkel RX.Helix coatings for maximum contrast and flare control. Swarovski's newest spotting scopes set a new standard in the industry. As if that weren't enough, the Austrian manufacturer also brought to market its first laser rangefinder binocular, the EL Range. Yes, it combines the electronics of a 1,500-yard rangefinder with one of the world's most optically precise binoculars, but does so with virtually no increase in weight or bulk. The Range is just two ounces heavier than the standard EL, less than an inch longer and no wider. It retains the doublehinge, open design for comfortable, wrap-around, single-hand control of each barrel. An integral computer program calculates correct trajectory of angled shots. Best of all, light transmission remains at an impressive 91 percent, which makes giving Swarovski the Sporting Classics Optics of the Year Award a bright idea. – Ron Spomer There are at least two ways to judge a "rifle of the year." One is execution – the finest construction and materials in a classic format. The other is innovation. This year Sporting Classics recognizes Merkel for innovation in its straight-pull bolt-action RX.Helix centerfire rifle, the fastest bolt-action in the world thanks to a 1:2 ratio geared bolt mechanism. Since 1898 bolt-action big game rifles have hewn to the script laid down by Paul Mauser. The cartridge is locked into battery by turning the bolt handle downward so that steel lugs, from two to as many as nine in some designs, mesh within deep, strong recesses in the barrel or action. Wedge and cam locking actions were extant prior to 1898 and many proved strong and reliable in sporting slide-action and autoloading rifles throughout the 20th century, but rarely in manually operated bolt-actions. While the enhanced recycling speed of a straight pull is obvious, its improved aiming control is less recognized but equally beneficial. Dispensing with the fourway movement (up, back, forward, down) of the traditional turn-bolt helps shooters stay on target for follow-up shots. Additional features that make the Helix unique are its simple, take-down and switch-barrel properties; easily removed bolt head; integral rail mount bases; manual cocking lever; slim contours and straight comb stock. – Ron Spomer S P O R T I N G C 61 L A S S I C S
