Credit unions worldwide are celebrating International Credit Union Day®
on October 17, 2019, and Redstone Federal Credit Union joins them
in communicating the benefits of being a credit union member. Credit
unions continue to be just as vital today as when people first pooled their
money to help one another through a rough patch.
Simply put, credit unions are cooperatives that provide their members
affordable loans, attractive savings products and personal service. Credit
unions empower people to take control of their financial future.
According to a 2017 survey by the FDIC, 25 percent of U.S. households are unbanked or
underbanked. e unbanked or underbanked are people who either have no bank account or have
an account with a bank or credit union but still use services outside it, such as payday loans.
Redstone looks for ways to reach these communities and invite them to join us. We want to help
members achieve their financial dreams through financial inclusion. eir dreams may start
with simply opening a savings account to cover unexpected expenses, but can lead to buying
their first home or sending a child to college. Read on page 4 how we work with St. Vincent de
Paul to combat the payday loan trap.
Serving rural communities is also a priority at Redstone. Just this year, we partnered with
Rural King – America's Farm and Home Store – to offer membership and low-cost loans to
its customers.
Credit union membership opens doors to a host of other benefits and services. Now that's
something to celebrate!
