RETAILOBSERVER.COM FEBRUARY 2020 38 The design intent for this small space was to create a guest bathroom that would wow guests and send them into a temporary escape of serenity and old world charm. The footprint of the powder room was somewhat different than average and a bit more complex to achieve an optimal layout, as it wraps around the staircase resulting in an L-shaped plan. We wanted to add character to the space, first and foremost with the walls. We finalized on a custom silk mural. We customized the mural to fit the exact ceiling heights of the space. Each panel for the mural had to be carefully calculated in advance of the renovation, given the very long lead time on this specialty product. The pedestal vanity provides a light and airy feel, yet it's delicately adorned with classic details. The result is a jewel box feel that creates a statement. The idea was a refreshed and minimal old-world feel without an overly opulent, or heavy adornment of detail. The homeowner wanted this bathroom to be accessible for her elderly father in case he needed to live in the house. Our goal was to gut the bathroom and replace with a large, accessible curbless shower, and a vanity that could accommodate a wheelchair if necessary. We took some time to find a unique stone slab as a feature wall. We wanted this bath to be unique, but also to fit with the house. A few design solutions included the combination of subway tile, feature wall, polished nickel finishes, and console vanity to achieve a fresh, contemporary space with a traditional vibe. The curbless shower and fixed glass panel allowed for maximum accessibility without compromising design, and a double console vanity provides wheelchair access & built-in towel bars. Integrated side lighting for flattering images completed the vanity.
