MARCH 2020 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 37 Our goal was to transform this 1960s-era outdated, closed-off kitchen into a lively, flowing space, seamlessly integrating the kitchen with the living and dining areas where the clients and their guests could enjoy the ocean view and each other's company. We designed a curved wall dressed with wood mosaic connecting the foyer and living area to the kitchen, softening the harsh, constrained angles of the original layout and laying the groundwork for a motif of curves and circles carried throughout our design. To maximize storage and spaciousness, we camouflaged appliances behind false doors, grouping the tallest appliances together to achieve balance and flow. In lieu of an island, we added a dining table in the center of the design, allowing for entertaining while integrating the social spaces of the residence with the functional space of the kitchen. Through a game of proportions, scale, and continuity, we transformed a small, outdated space into a contemporary retreat perfect for a dinner party with a spectacular ocean view. The interior of this expansive kitchen is designed to reflect the progressive architecture, deeply rooted in the past, of the home and its environs. The minimalist exterior architecture called for simple interior design solutions, exquisite attention to detail and the use of texture to soften the hard surfaces used throughout the space. A simple rectangular kitchen flows from the dramatic entry connecting the dining space with the great room. The wish list included: food preservation systems and space for processing the garden and orchard harvest; abundant natural light and a warm vibrant color palette to soften the hard custom brick and porcelain tile floors that flow from the exterior throughout the interior; comfortable island seating, separate from the preparation areas, allowing casual interaction with family and friends; and a kitchen designed for entertaining and guest chefs that retained a warm, organic feeling.
