For this project, we cleared out the space by removing some walls
and chose only the most necessary adornments and cabinetry simply
laid in horizontal strips to keep the eye moving from one to the next. A
subtle layering of textured materials created just enough visual interest
and intrigue without being distracting. During design, we found
ourselves appreciating the way that small spaces are treated, with
every inch becoming meaningful and special. We incorporated a
foldable utility faucet meant for a camper to the beverage bar, to allow
a sneaky area for the client's lower priority of entertaining. Keeping
these items tucked away helped to keep the clutter out of sight.
Design objectives included: an open kitchen to dining area for
better visuals around the home; better circulation & movement; at
least two casual spaces for quick eating at an island; a central
starting point and design language to reflect throughout the home;
and a unique beverage bar without making the spaces feel heavy
with too much cabinetry.
This project was the first universal design project the
KAI Team had been invited to work on. The Olympic
village condo was a large unit that had a great layout to
make the renovation possible.
The team re-designed the existing kitchen to have an
accessible layout and added pull-down accessories to
all of the upper cabinets. We turned the flex room/den
into a usable space for wheelchair storage, small
appliance and additional cabinet space.
In the bathroom, we modified the existing vanity to be
wheelchair accessible and added a bench in the
shower.
After working on this project we feel incredibly grateful
and honored to have created an environment where our
client can now fully use and enjoy her home.
