PORTLAND, OREGON
This house was designed for pioneering Northwest
Horticulturist Louis G. Pfunder by the prominent and
prolific Portland Architect Emil Schacht. The client
wanted to restore the severely deteriorated 115-year-
old gothic stairwell stained glass windows. The project
scope included carefully removing the 12 stained glass
windows, cleaning all interior wood surfaces and
removing extensive shellac and paint on all related
woodwork, replacing all leaded glass caming and
associated putty, along with a number of broken and
cracked glass panes, and the faithful reproduction of
wood elements. The restored windows feature an
improved leaded glass design to prevent future
armature sagging and a new ultralight protection finish.

The goal of this project was to have an architecturally
interesting connection between the floors of their home
where none existed. The flow of traffic easily moves through
the space and around the switchback set of stairs. The iron
and glass railings provide safety and add a lightness to the
area. The spacing of the glass panels is balanced, and the
black iron is a striking complement to the wood stairs and
exposed stone foundation on the lower level. The
craftsmanship and attention to detail are outstanding, with
clean welds and scribing materials to the stone foundation.
This project is a success!
