He then felt compelled to improve the home's front exterior to bring it up to the aesthetic level of the interiors. Adding more emphasis on the front entry door, which was dwarfed by an oversized light fixture and bay window above, was the solution. The brick façade was continued beyond the existing roof line, terminating in a gable. The entry was also enlarged to be more in proportion with the bay window, which received a proportioned roof treatment with a graceful downward sweep. Prior to the purchase, the residence had been flipped by someone looking to make a quick buck and corners were cut to achieve the greatest return on investment. They requested a well-built, low-maintenance exterior with a variety of cladding materials to lend some visual interest to a home that was very monochromatic. A new metal roof, wood-look composite planks on portions of the exterior, and exterior sconces that complement the cladding and chimney caps met their request. Pfunder House represents an early example of Craftsman architecture, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The client wanted a restoration specialist who could recommend and execute design details for their deteriorating porch railing components. Severe dry rot had impacted the porch railings and the lower railing had completely deteriorated. The project involved removing 70 percent of the deteriorated existing railing system, introducing longer-lasting construction material choices, creating reproduction millwork, and the masterful reinstallation of all new work amidst the existing historic building fabric. xceence E 2020 EVENING OF
