usp.org 9 Why do quality ingredients matter? Pharmaceutical manufacturers rely on suppliers around the world to provide ingredients for their products. Safeguarding this increas- ingly global pharmaceutical s upply chain is complex. Ingredient suppliers and manufacturers face extensive risks when sourcing materials from multiple countries of origin and from differ- ent companies. Some risks are inherent to the complexities of the sources—plant, animal, mineral, and synthetic—or to the amount and level of processing. Other risks are external to the material, such as country of origin, potential for adulteration, complexity of the supply chain, and experience with and reputation of the dis- tributor. Despite these risks, drug product manufacturers are responsible for ensuring the quality of fi nished products, which requires that they ensure the quality of the ingredients the products contain. External risk factors Country of origin Supply chain complexities Material value and motivation for adulteration Reputation of manufacturers and distributors Transportation practices Internal risk factors Source of material Amount and type of processing Lack of compendial standards Complexity of material Product variability (e.g., season, temperature) Ensure quality, build trust with the USP Verifi ed Mark Being able to trust who you do busi- ness with matters now more than ever.
