JANUARY 2021 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 35 storage is high on homeowners' lists, including linen storage, open shelving and free-standing storage cabinetry. As aging in place becomes a main concern for many homeowners, the popularity of larger freestanding showers to accommodate two people with zero-clearance entry for mobility devices, integrated seating and grab bars has grown. CREATING AN OASIS A priority for most homeowners over the next three years will be providing a sense of wellness and relaxation in the main bathroom. Light-colored quartz on countertops, in addition to painted or wood grain finishes for floating or free-standing vanities, will create a spa- like aesthetic. Additionally, the trend of melding modern and organic styles has steadily risen in the past year. In fact, this style category has risen to the third-most-popular just behind contemporary and transitional design aesthetics. Other ways bathroom design elements establish a feeling of serenity can be seen in the addition of larger windows (with fewer panes) and skylights to bring the outdoors in, bathing the space in natural light; rain showerheads; steam showers, and heated flooring – 77% of homeowners will incorporate this feature in the next three years. "Bathrooms continue to be a place to escape, unwind and relax in this digitally focused world," said NKBA member Elma Gardener, CMKBD/CID, owner and president of By Design Studio Inc. "Luxury showers with steam, digitally controlled aromatherapy and multi-functioning showering systems are balanced with the need for connection with our environment. Beautiful freestanding tubs add a sculptural element to the expanded bathroom space. Glass door access to exterior showers, pools and spas creates a 'room with a view' while soothing neutral color palettes and organic materials such as teak and natural stone continue the trend to bring the exterior into the space." TECHNOLOGY IS KEY Smart bathrooms with WiFi-connected devices have been on the rise for the past several years. However, whole-home technology is predicted to increase in the bathroom space. This includes mirrors with integrated internet access and displays to stream programming or check email, vanities with integrated electrical outlets, smart controls for floor/shower temperatures, water conversation, motion-sensor lighting and leak detection sensors with mobile alerts. In response to COVID-19, app-controlled and voice-controlled capabilities to operate faucets are key to promoting a hands-free environment. Bidet toilet seats also assist with hygiene, especially for individuals whose motion might be compromised. App control from a mobile device can set climate and humidity levels, water temperature, heated flooring and lighting, and many products feature motion-control and touch/tap functions as well. Additional details and a complete report of the NKBA 2021 Design Trends is available in the NKBA store under "Market Research Reports." The study is included in NKBA membership; non-members may purchase the report for $2,995. According to the NKBA 2021 Design Trend study, many designers will be using a light-colored quartz for primary bathroom countertops.
