October/November/December 2021 I 11 Figure 5 highlights minimum-touch automation functions built around a simple, low-cost workspace controller. An occupancy sensor turns the AV system on when people are in the meeting room and turns it off when the room is empty. There are no buttons to push or touch panels to tap to bring up the system. When a meeting attendee plugs in an active AV content source, such as a laptop, the workspace controller automatically switches the display input to show the content coming from the laptop. Display control is accomplished via the HDMI cable's Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) interface line. The work-space controller has other control ports (e.g., RS-232, IR/Serial, relay contact closures) to regulate operation of additional AV devices, room lighting, and motorized window coverings. The only thing that is touched during the meeting is the HDMI connector port into which the laptop plugs. EASY AUTOMATION FOR THE MODERN WORKSPACE Minimizes button presses with signal presence detection Automatically powers the system on when users enter the room To go completely touchless, users can skip the HDMI connector port and go wireless via Wi-Fi. Figure 6 shows how this is done. It is very similar to the workspace controller implementation discussed. However, a wired/wireless presentation system performs not only the functions of the workspace controller, but it also provides ingress for AV content from wireless access points delivered from the enterprise's corporate or guest user LAN via Ethernet.
