MARYSVILLE'S PROUD HERITAGE
Marysville, nestled at the foot of Mount Belmont just 30 minutes
northwest of Helena and a short distance from Great Divide ski area,
was established in the wake of Irishman Tommy Cruse's discovery of the
nearby Drumlummon mine in 1876. As Drumlummon became one of
the Treasure State's most profitable and longest-operating gold mines,
the mining camp rapidly grew into a vibrant, bustling community. Cruse
named the camp in honor of its first female pioneer, Mary Ralston.
As many as 4,000 people called Marysville home at its peak. e town
boasted the service of two railroads, 60 businesses, two newspapers, a
schoolhouse, a variety of fraternal societies and churches, an orchestra,
a brewery, and 27 saloons. "Within a dozen years, Helena will only be a
suburb of Marysville," one writer predicted in 1892.
Although the mine has long since shut down and all but about 80 of the
town's residents have moved on, Marysville's vibrant spirit remains. Its
short but nostalgic Main Street is lined with multiple historic buildings,
with the unique Marysville House in the center of it all.
Enjoy mouthwatering locally-sourced beef and a medley of seasonal vegetables and roasted potatoes.
Indulge in the smoky heartiness of a thick Marysville cheeseburger.
