With a few dedicated individuals, the society was created in 1983 and has flourished to around 300 strong, representing a full spectrum of water medium artists. e Society seeks to encourage the advancement, study, appreciation, and creation of watercolor painting in Montana and elsewhere. Many members paint in watercolor as well as other mediums. Some artists have achieved Signature Membership status by being accepted into the MTWS's Annual National Juried Watermedia Exhibition, an honor allowing members to place the MTWS initials aer their names. During Western Art Week, the MTWS Board of Directors will bestow its Artist of Merit title to honoree Tom Mostad. Mostad works in watercolors and oils, painting Montana's grand landscapes and wildlife. His artwork represents the natural beauty and history unique to the American West. It reflects his subject's spirit, a time and place seen momentarily but immortalized to remember forever. He finds himself behind the easel every day and constantly challenges his artistic ability. "Since I now paint almost every day, I can tell that I'm advancing," he said. "I'm learning by teaching myself technique as I paint, but I also watch videos, and I examine other artists' work and learn from them." e Society's premier show is held each fall in rotating cities throughout Montana. e exhibition, "Watermedia 2022," will celebrate its 40th Annual National Juried Competition, October 15 – November 12, 2022, at the Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana. is fall's exhibition is open to both members and non-members and traditionally has entries from nearly every state in the nation. e MTWS show kicks off at the Heritage Inn on ursday at 5 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday om 11 a.m. until well into the evening hours.
