Pharmaceutical Technology TRENDS IN MANUFACTURING 2022 eBOOK 9 ing codes to prevent counter feit ing—a re no longer enough. Instead, novel technologies are ga i ni ng t rac t ion a mong ma nu fac t u rers, for example, the use of micro tags made of inert materials, such as silicon dioxide. As the aver- age size of a micro tag is 50–110 µm, tags can be printed inside or outside the capsule surface. Ta k ing transparency further still, new block- chain-based technology now often includes real- time geolocation and biometric tracking capa- bilities. Combined with QR code serialization, this enables manufacturers to trace the location and contents of products—from the factory to final products. Complex and multicolor print- ing options on the surface of a capsule could be one answer to effectively protect products against counterfeiting. The future of OSD forms In such a fast-paced, competitive market, keep- ing ahead of the latest manufacturing trends w ill enable OSD manufacturers to remain at the forefront of dependable, cost-effective, and convenient drug development and administra- tion. For example, combination filling in cap- sules can reduce drug-to-drug interaction as well as reduce t he pill burden on patients by incorporating multiple active ingredients into one patient-friendly capsule. Across the manufacturing industry, companies a re adapt ing to t he cha ng ing ma rket cond i- tions that continue to evolve. Digital technolo- gies such as automat ion, digita lizat ion, a nd AI will play a key role in allowing companies to be more proactive in response to changes i n t he s up pl y c h a i n w h i le t a k i n g a more integrated approach to enable control and f lex- ibility of production. Finding a reliable partner across the supply chain will be crucial for sourcing cutting-edge equipment and quality consumables. Addition- ally, guaranteeing that machines perform will ultimately help to develop safe and efficacious dosage forms to get treatments to the people who need them. References 1.
