An extensive courtroom rehabilitation of the
Jackson County Historic Courthouse was completed
in 2020. The original courthouse building was
constructed almost 150 years ago. This project
offered a unique opportunity to preserve century-old
materials while remaining innovative in the
construction process and producing a polished yet
historically consistent result. The courthouse job
entailed an enormous number of challenges due to
the historical origins of the building and its importance
within the community. Protecting and preserving the
entire existing woodwork, flooring and archive
documents while designing the mechanical systems
to accommodate a building constructed in 1879
proved to be very challenging – and rewarding.

The clients wanted an attractive, functional
outdoor entertainment space with a modern
aesthetic that would provide lighting and
protection from the elements. Concrete coring for
electrical service, waterproofing, meticulous
coordination with electricians, and the installation
of a sloped pitch with a gravity-fed gutter system
were challenges overcome while building a
structure that sits atop a parking garage. The
structure was engineered to mount precisely
on-center of a pre-stressed concrete beam. Now
the new outdoor area is a seamless extension of
the existing space, providing tranquility in the
heart of a bustling city.
