This button panel shares space on the work surface with a computer keyboard and mouse (Figure 7). FIGURE 7: AV system control button panel and computer keyboard on primary AV stand shelf. The selected HDMI content is connected from the switcher to an AV over IP encoder via a short HDMI cable. The encoder passes the HDMI video and audio, along with RS-232 control, to the primary AV stand's display and soundbar. The encoder simultaneously feeds the HDMI AV content and control from the primary AV stand to the associated secondary AV stands up to 330 ft (≈100 m) away through NTU's enterprise network via the campus 1GbE (802.3ab) and 10/100/1000 Base-T Cat 6A cabled Ethernet infrastructure. Secondary AV Stand System The secondary AV stands include an AV over IP decoder to receive AV content and control from the primary AV stands. The HDMI AV content is compressed for AV over IP transmission by a visually lossless, low latency compression algorithm that maintains 4K video resolu- tion. Codecs in the encoder and decoder perform the compression and decompression (Figure 8). AV Stand Control The primary AV stands include an AV control processor. This processor controls and monitors the status of all AV equipment in the primary AV stand and also, via the AV over IP network link, all AV equipment in the secondary AV stands. User-initiated commands affecting both the primary and secondary AV stands include AV program source selection, display/sound bar power on-off, and audio volume control. Control functions applicable to the primary AV stand only are power on/off for the Apple TV and the Miracast receiver when the user pushes the display On/Off buttons on the button panel. This is done so that these two Wi-Fi enabled devices are discoverable on the campus network only when the primary AV stand is in use. All other primary and secondary AV stand system components remain continuously powered-on in standby as long as the stands are plugged into the AC mains wall sockets. In a nod to COVID-19, touchless power on/off can be performed with a foot switch on the base of the primary AV stand instead of at the AV system control button panel.
