The Last Banana
Climate change is a distinct threat to
bananas and the farmers who harvest them.
To draw attention to this potential crisis,
Fair Trade International, the certification
for social justice and sustainability, recently
introduced the world's first Non-Fungible
Banana at the COP27 Climate Conference.
"The Last Banana was developed to
warn the global community that the future
of the banana may very well be a digital one.
It's a powerful reminder that climate change
threatens a vital staple crop for nearly 500
million people around the world, and those
farmers and workers must be included in the
path forward," says Kate Stritzinger, director
of marketing & external relations at Fairtrade
America. The NFB is non-edible and not
commercially available but is accessible to
audiences in over 21 Fairtrade markets as
Fairtrade organizations around the world
encourage people to visit the NFB's virtual
gallery online. —Denise Shoukas
