42 | SIGNATURE MONTANA Justin's first taste of the military came while aending the ROTC program at Montana State University in the early '90s. He was on the path to commission when he also developed a deep interest in medicine. He then put himself through med school, oen electing to learn firsthand on his own rather than in the classroom. He worked and trained with an ambulance crew in Great Falls before moving to other medical facilities across California, Texas, Washington, and Colorado. While finishing medical school, Justin circled back to his military ambitions, joining the Army around 2001. He was cramming for a test in medical school on 9/11 when the tragedy hit. e test was canceled that day, and he recalls later discussing with his colleagues, "We're all heading to the sandbox as soon as we graduate." Having completed his medical program, airborne (parachute) school, and flight surgeon school, Justin was now a flight surgeon in the US Army preparing for deployment to Afghanistan with the Aviation Task Force. Eager to serve on helicopter medical evacuation missions while also providing primary care to the flight team, he found himself fascinated by the area's history. His tour of duty brought him through many heavy combat experiences, including the Bale of Wanat (one of the bloodiest Taliban aacks of the war), Outpost Restrepo (the story of whose soldiers later became an award-winning documentary), and the Korengal Valley campaign (nicknamed the Valley of Death).
