Inhalation August 2024 33 RESPIRATORY MEDICINE NEWS New policy helps Illinois schools treat respiratory distress QUINCY, ILLINOIS, US— e Herald-Whig reported that a change in state policy will make it easier for Illinois schools to treat students experiencing respiratory distress. A standing order will now allow trained personnel to use "undesignated" asthma inhalers, kept on hand, to treat students who develop respiratory distress. e order was signed by Illinois Department of Public Health Director, Sameer Vohra, MD. Undesignated medications are not prescribed for a specific student but can be used in an emergency to address any student's symp- toms related to asthma or other respiratory issues. Previously, each school had to seek out and secure its own standing order from a physician in their area to keep the medication on hand. e standing order will enhance the efforts of the Resources for Every School Confronting Unex- pected Emergencies (RESCUE) Illinois Schools program. e joint initiative of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America— MidStates Chapter and the Respi- ratory Health Association secured state funding to provide medica- tion, equipment and an imple- mentation handbook to more than 3,100 of the state's public schools, (about 80%), to date. "Just like the EpiPens that we keep for allergy emergencies, this will be a great addition to emergency meds available to those students in need," said Christi Goudschaal, Brown County School Nurse. "Students in need during times of respiratory distress may benefit from having an inhaler that they may not have had through their primary doctor, especially if it's an undiagnosed condition."
