Parkway Kitchen — As with many older
homes, this 1930s gem did not have a functional,
beautiful kitchen. The first order of business was
to replace all cabinetry, appliances, and finishes
for better function for daily tasks and large
gatherings. The secondary goal was to match the
beauty of the rest of the home, with traditional
details, symmetry, and warmth. By making minor
adjustments to the original footprint, this design
increases storage, incorporates larger appliances,
improves flow and connectivity, and creates an
aesthetic that blends seamlessly into the home.
• Our design objectives were to update the
cabinetry, appliances, lighting, and all finishes
to create a kitchen that functions well and
also complements the style of the 1931 home,
to increase storage and counter space to
accommodate daily meals, as well as hosting
large gatherings for family and friends, and to
create dedicated spaces for coffeemaker,
cookbooks, drop-zone tasks, small appliances,
step stool, and pantry items.
• Design solutions included opening up the back
entry and incorporating an existing closet and
small pantry into the main space to allow for a
newly configured pantry, drop zone, and wider
entry from front foyer centered on the sink
window.
• Create symmetry with cabinetry at the sink
window and a focal-point range alcove with a
custom hood that ties into existing woodwork
details in the home.
• Incorporate a furniture-style moveable island
for additional prep and landing space.
