Beginning with artists like James Boren, who from the very beginning of Art of the West in 1987, encouraged us to be the best we could be, there have been others. We have wonderful letters from art- ists like Tom Lovell, who took the time to write us after we first fea- tured him on the cover of this maga- zine in 1990. His gratitude was both genuine and almost surreal to us, as we had been fans of his work for decades. We remember with fond- ness artists such as John Clymer, Frank McCarthy, and Ray Swanson. Other good friends included Marilyn Bendell, Neil Boyle, and Don “Putt” Putman. Arnold Friberg wrote us beautiful, full-page, handwritten let- ters about his art. Jim Reynolds was a master artist who always took the time to return our calls. Fritz White was a good friend. More recently, we grieve the pass- ing of tremendously talented artists Paul Calle and Clark Hulings. We have a very kind and personal note from Clark regarding our cover story on him and his paintings in the January/February 2007 issue. These letters from our heroes are treasures. Occasionally, someone who is thinking about going into the art business approaches us and won- ders aloud about the artists working today and whether or not their work will approach the quality of their pre- decessors. Without equivocation, we answer in the positive. The work being produced today is worthy of collectors’ attention. All the masterworks of our heroes continue to appear in auc- tions and museum collections for all to see. Will some of the work being produced today reach that status? Of course it will. Tierney adness comes with some regu- larity these days, as we grieve the passing of some master edge, for example, that years ago the work of the many Chinese painters working today was not visible. They have helped to close the gap of the passing of the Tom Lovells and the John Clymers. Some of the work being produced these days by master Chinese art- ists holds it own just fine, when compared to work produced 20 years ago. They are not alone. Walk into the many fine galleries and art shows across the country, and you will find lifetime treasures worthy of your attention. In fact, some of the art being produced today is by very young artists whose best days are presumably ahead of them. One more piece of news: Next year we will celebrate 25 years of publishing Art of the West. While that might not be a significant milestone for you, it is for us. We are more than proud that a small company like ours could compete in a difficult market environment. As we close in on 2012, we have some special things planned, and we invite you to send us a note by mail or e-mail about anything you have enjoyed about the magazine over the years. By our estimation, we have fea- tured more than 500 artists and their work. We’d love to hear from them, as well. While those who now are painting north of the big, blue sky can’t be in touch, we treasure our memories of them. Enjoy the issue. P.S. Please take a minute and check out our new redesigned website, which is www.artofthewest.com. We are excited about it and will offer some great advertising opportuni- ties for our advertisers as well. Allan J. Duerr and Thomas F. Tierney are publishers of Art of the West.
