LASTSHOT S T UA RT S tuart is a 16-week-old cinnamon-faced black bear who just became a resident of Monterey County. Charlie Sammut, president and owner of Monterey Zoological Society in Salinas, formerly Wild Things, found the little bear at a sanctuary in Colorado while he was there to pick up a lioness to transport to Jamaica. "Stuart was bred for zoos. Hopefully here he will remain a free contact bear," Sammut says. Construction is underway for the Monterey Zoo, which is "being built very slowly but very surely as fund- ing comes in," Sammut says. "Hopefully in a few months we will have our big tiger exhibit open." — Brett Wilbur 256 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • S U M M E R / F A L L 2 0 1 4 Photo: Kelli Uldall
