8 STORM & SECURITY PROTECTION / PEOPLE IN THE KNOW 2014 Panda Releases New Impact Line for Coastal Markets Panda Windows & Doors, Las Vegas, NV, introduced its new All-Aluminum Impact lift and slide windows at the AIA Florida annual convention in July. Designed to comply with stringent Florida Building Codes (TAS 201; TAS 202; and TAS 203) and U.S. building regulations from wind-borne debris areas outside the high velocity hurricane zone (HVHZ), the All-Aluminum Impact (IS.14) lift and slide features components that can endure large missile and hurricane impact, the company states. This system permits oversized panels to withstand Category 5 hurricanes, tropical storms, high winds and driving rain, while standing up to coastal concerns such as corrosion, humidity and salt, it adds. Testing simulations made on the pocketing Impact system by Architectural Testing resulted in structural loads at 100 psf, water infiltration at 20 psf, and air infiltration at 1.57 psf for the 10-foot tall and even taller 12-foot lift and slide systems. With these results, Panda can craft large-sized panels providing performance and weather protection, the company states. Switch Connects Shutters to Smoke Detectors Mangeney Controls, Inc., Albion, MI, has introduced Fire Sense, a dual purpose switch that operates motorized roll-down shutters and will interface with any smoke detector system. When the smoke detector detects smoke, Fire Sense will automatically raise the shutter to the open position, allowing firefighters and rescue workers to enter and allowing those inside to escape. "Motorized roll down shutters are designed to keep out strong winds and anything they might throw at your window and doors," says Bill Mangeney, Mangeney Controls' president. "That's great when it comes to a hurricane, but it can be a real safety hazard in the event of a fire. That's why we created Fire Sense."
