I visit my alma mater five or more days a week. I live a dozen miles from campus. Regularly attend university events. In short, it's easy for things to become routine. Last spring, I received a wake-up call. I met an amazing student, Christian Cummins. She was in the midst of finishing her senior year, enjoying friendships and facing her second heart transplant (see page 22). In April, she successfully underwent the procedure and began recovery. Through it all, Christian had her mind set on one goal – to return to Mossy Creek and receive her degree at Spring Commencement. One month after surgery and defying odds, she walked across the stage and joined Carson-Newman's alumni. Christian is a reminder for us to not take our alma mater for granted. Carson-Newman continues to make a difference in the lives of students the same as it has done for generations. May this young woman inspire us to be renewed in our love for this place – our alma mater. J. Charles Key Editor
