Tablets & Capsules January 2015 32C 95 percent of the cases, we've been successful." The recent changes in the USDA's National List of Allowed and Pro hi - bited Substances are meant to ensure that products labeled "organic" are, in fact, made with organic ingredients. Accordingly, manufacturers must now stop labeling their products "organic" if they do not contain at least 95 per - cent organic ingredients. "If you make a tablet and everything in it is organic, but you need to use a non- organic flow agent or lubricant, you can no longer call it organic," Peirce said. "Instead, the label will have to say 'made with' organic ingredients, which is a lesser designation." If a product contains less than 70 percent organic ingredients, the principal label cannot use the word "organic" or display any certification seals. Manufacturers wishing to avoid such label changes can adjust their for mu - lations to include organic substitutes instead. Initially, Nu-Flow sold at a pre - mium, but that's changed. "We de - cided that if people were prepared to make a wholesale change and make a commitment to this ingre dient, we would match [silicon diox ide sup - pliers] on price. We wanted to take price out of the equation. Also, with the growth in volume and number of customers, we're able to achieve some economies of scale," Peirce said. In addition to the silicon dioxide replacement, the company manu - factures naturally derived alternatives to magnesium stearate, tri-calcium phosphate, maltodextrin, and mono- and diglycerides. The products are sold domestically and exported to some 40 countries through a network of distributors. T&C Ribus, St. Louis, MO.
