Throughout its 1000 year history, the town has been used by various Monarchs including Ivan the Terrible as a base for attacks on the Tatars and Poles. Infamous as the location where Ivan the Terrible's 10–year old son Dmitry was killed in 1591, the town's cathedral bell that rang the news of Dmitry's death was "exiled" to Siberia. Visit the renowned green-domed Cathedral of Transfi guration perched at the water's edge, then visit the Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood. Day 9 Moscow (FB,L,D) Welcome to Moscow, Russia's capital city on the banks of the Moskva River. The city's architecture is a refl ection of its 860 year old history with many reminders of both its imperial and Soviet past. A sprawling metropolis, Moscow is the fi nancial and political centre of Russia with a population of around 13 million. Today's city tour of Moscow takes in Red Square, St Basil's Cathedral, the Lenin Mausoleum, Bolshoy Theatre and the Olympic Stadium. Then we visit the Cosmonaut training centre to experience the complex Russian space facilities. In your free time, take a ride on Moscow's Metro famous for the ornate design of many of its stations, containing outstanding examples of socialist realistic art. Discover More: Kostroma Show in the evening (see pages 134–137) Day 10 Moscow (FB,L,D) The Kremlin, for many people the symbol of Moscow and indeed Russia, is the former seat of the Russian Government and a unique historical, architectural and artistic reserve.
