C CMCS Joins Go Red to Fight Heart Disease in Women ardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, is the number one cause of death for American women. Black women have nearly double the risk of heart disease and stroke than whites in Indiana according to the Indiana State Department of Health. While men are more likely to have a heart attack at a younger age and survive than women, and about half of all women who have heart attacks die from heart disease each year. As a company dedicated to promoting health in our members and our em- ployees, CMCS is joining the fight against one of the most prevalent diseases in women. CMCS is proud to announce that it is a silver sponsor of the American Heart Association's (AHA) 2012 Go Red campaign for women. We want to support the AHA's mission to re- duce disability and death from heart disease and stroke, especially for the women in our communities. Here are some sobering facts from the AHA about cardiovascular disease in women. • Cardiovascular disease ranks first among all disease catego- ries in hospital discharges for women. • According to the US Depart- ment of Health and Human Services, 1 in 3 women will die of heart disease. • Nearly two-thirds of American women who died of heart attacks had no prior symptoms. • Every 34 seconds a woman dies from heart disease. • At least 8.6 million women die from heart disease each year. Most women know that prevention is the key to having a healthy heart. This includes stopping smoking, exercising and eating a healthy diet. Reading food labels to learn what kinds of fat are in the food products you buy can help you choose a heart healthy diet. If you need a refresher on which fats are good for your heart, the American Heart Association has an educational tool available online called, "Meet the Fats." Go to http:// www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Get- tingHealthy/FatsAndOils/MeettheFats to learn which fats are better for you and lower your risk for heart disease. Join CMCS in supporting the mission of the American Heart As- sociation. The Go Red Campaign encourages you to be part of the cure. Tell five women you love that you want them to have a healthy heart. En- courage each of them to get a regular preventative health exam and if they smoke, ask them to please stop. Read nutrition labels to make healthy foods choices for your family, and get active! Go Red in 2012 - visit www.heart.org to learn more about reducing heart disease in your family.
