S P O R T I N G C L A S S I C S 6 9 Todd Tanner F l y F i s h i n g first conversation, but I just want to state for the record that the "best" fly fisherman isn't the guy who catches the most fish or the biggest fish, or even the angler with the most knowledge or technical expertise. It's the guy (or gal) who has the most fun on the water. I want you to think about that for a minute. Fly fishing isn't rocket science. It's not brain surgery. It's not going to cure cancer or eliminate poverty or do away with hunger or disease. Except for those rare occasions when we hope to put a few fish in the frying pan, we fish to have fun. It's about enjoying ourselves and about meeting the challenge with as much skill and passion as we can muster—and about immersing ourselves chest deep in the natural world. Don't ever take yourself or your fishing too seriously. Just because fly fishing is a graceful, elegant sport doesn't mean you should put it, or yourself, on a pedestal. We're fishermen.
