DEAN The University of Minnesota invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Carlson School of Management. The University of Minnesota, with its four campuses, is one of the most comprehensive universities in the country and ranks among the most prestigious research universities in the United States. The Carlson School is recognized as one of the nation's leading business schools. The school is located in a new, state-of-the-art facility on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, between the centers of commerce for the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, a vibrant business community offering strong opportunities for partnership between the school, business and industry. The Dean of the Carlson School of Management will lead and manage the school. As a senior academic officer, the Dean will be expected to work closely with business, government and other educational organizations in shaping and fostering the programs of the school. The successful candidate must have the ability to provide innovative leadership, management skill and insight, and an adroit ability to manage relationships across a wide spectrum of institutions. Also the Dean must have an ability to motivate aca- demic excellence with a multidisciplinary faculty, a diverse student body, and the faculties and centers in related academic departments. In addition, demonstrated ability to develop external relations and fundraising opportunities with the public and private sector in support of the school's programs will be an important consideration in selection. The Dean will exercise University-wide leadership in formulating policies and providing educational programs that engage the University of Minnesota in responding to statewide issues, such as workforce and economic development, and other relevant national and international issues. Fostering an organiza- tional and educational climate that promotes and celebrates excellence is an important priority. The next Dean of the Carlson School will have the opportunity and support to move the business school into the front ranks of the distinguished business schools in the country. Candidates must have either (a) an advanced degree in a relevant field and a significant record that combines research and scholarship activity with administrative or managerial experiences, or (b) exten- sive high level administrative experience in a large organization, with at least a bachelor's degree. A faculty appointment may be included in the position, depending upon the acceptability of the academic credentials to the relevant department. The position reports to the Senior Vice President and Provost and is a University of Minnesota senior administrative appointment, classified as a Professional and Administrative position. faculty rank, and tenure are negotiable based upon qualifications and experience. Located on the 40-acre Camden campus, which is situated in the heart of the bustling Camden Waterfront and metro Philadelphia region, the School of Business is playing an important role in assisting in the economic redevelopment of Camden. New market-rate housing is being built just off of the campus, and a new graduate housing for business and law students is planned. South Jersey is the fastest-growing region of the state, and its economy is being fueled by high-tech companies as well as tourism. The Camden campus, which has 6,000 students, is one of three campuses of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The University is a member of the Association of American Universities and a number of its graduate programs are ranked in the top 20 by the National Research Council. Rutgers-Camden offers 34 undergraduate majors and 13 graduate and professional programs. The position of the Dean of the School of Business – Camden (SBC) requires an individual who has demonstrated the potential to provide the vision, creativity and energetic leadership to advance the School to the next level of excellence; to provide superlative academic leadership; to develop innovative programs which connect the School to the region's business communities; and to expand the financial resources of the School. Reporting to the Provost of the Camden Campus, the Dean of the School of Business provides leadership and direction for the faculty in planning and implementing academic programs; administering the School's resources; communicating the School's missions and goals to internal and external constituencies; promoting scholarly research and faculty development; and raising funds from external sources. Established in 1988, the School of Business enjoys an outstanding reputation for teaching, research and outreach to the business community of South Jersey. The School, which is fully accredited by the AACSB, offers bachelor's degrees in Accounting, Finance, Hospitality Management, Management and Marketing, an M.B.A. and a J.D./M.B.A. with the School of Law-Camden. It serves nearly 600 undergraduates and 300 M.B.A. students, including international students. It has 32 outstanding full-time faculty, whose scholarship is ranked highly in terms of its impact and scope. Several of the School's Departments and individual faculty have received national and international recognition in surveys. The School operates highly successful outreach programs in the region. The mission of the School of Business is through teaching to prepare students for leadership in the region's fast-growing economy; through scholarship to generate and disseminate knowledge related to the improvement of management; and through service to the School, the Camden Campus, Rutgers University, and the region to improve each. In order to achieve this mission and to lead the School to the next level of excellence, the Dean must be willing to support innovation and change. This will require that the Dean have the ability to work cooperatively to build consensus and sustain strong collegial relationships with faculty, staff, students and administrators. At the same time, the Dean must work with the faculty to maintain and strengthen the traditions of outstanding scholarship and teaching. It is imperative that the Dean build even stronger relationships with alumni, industry, government and the business and financial communities of Philadelphia and South Jersey. The Dean must be able to communicate effectively to these groups, as well as to the University's administration and governing boards, the vision for the School and generate the expanded resources necessary to accomplish that vision. Candidates must present a record of outstanding achievement in their field of primary experience. A PhD is strongly preferred, and candidates should present a distinguished scholarly record, commensurate with appointment to tenured faculty rank. Candidates who present a record of major accomplishments as business or government executives should have an advanced degree and be able to demonstrate that they know and appreciate academic goals and missions.
