FEDA 2016 Compensation Survey One of the major challenges facing business owners is in providing a fair and adequate compensation and ben- efits package for employees. If the pack- age is insufficient, the company cannot attract and keep qualified personnel. If the package is too generous, profit tends to suffer. In trying to establish a sound compen- sation system, managers are continually looking for benchmarks. That is, they want to know how much other compa- nies are paying for certain positions and what fringe benefits packages are being offered but developing such benchmarks have always been a very difficult under- taking in distribution. Typical compensa- tion surveys almost always focus on one particular line of trade. As a result, they tend to have very small sample sizes. The 2016 Employee Compensation Study eliminates these problems. As has been true since 2002, more than 35 other distribution organizations are sponsor- ing the largest cross-industry compensa- tion survey ever conducted. It is antici- pated that approximately 1,000 firms, operating 4,000 branches, will take part. With such a large-scale study, members will receive a wealth of information. Types of Information Provided Compensation - The compensation data will be broken into three components , by position, base salary, bonus and total compensation. In addition, the range of common experience for total compensa- tion will also be provided. The positions to be covered include executives, those with titles such as CEO, CFO, chief mar- keting officer and the like. Operating employees include such positions as office manager, purchasing agent, ware- house employee and warehouse super- visor. Both inside and outside sales reps will be represented, and branch manag- ers. For the first time, survey results will include CAD/Revit designers. continued on page 27
