August 6, 2009 SENATE CONFIRMS NOMINATION OF SONIA SOTOMAYOR Aer the rerement of Supreme Court Jusce David Souder, President Barack Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor inMay 2009. The Senate confirmed the nominaon on August 6, 2009 by a vote of 68 to 31. Sotomayor became the 111th jusce in the history of the court, its third woman, and the first Hispanic to serve on the naon's highest court. Sonia Sotomayor was appointed to judgeships by three presidents: by George H.W. Bush to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, by Bill Clinton to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and by Barack Obama to the U.S. Supreme Court. 2009 ALABAMA ALTERS NATIONAL STATUARY HALL COLLECTIONWITH INCLUSION OF HELEN KELLER Helen Keller (1880–1968) is perhaps best known from the biographical play andmovie TheMiracleWorker, which includes the scene depicted in this statue. Aer illness le her deaf, blind, and dumb, Keller learned to communicate with the world fromAnnie Sullivan, eventually graduang fromcollege, wring an autobiog- raphy, and working in support of various social causes including the challenges faced by the physically handi- capped. This statue, currently housed in the Capitol Visitor Center, replaced one of Jabez LamarMonroe Curry, an advocate of free universal educaon and a Confederate lieutenant colonel.
