May 3, 2011 MICHIGAN CHANGES STATUE IN NATIONAL STATUARY HALL COLLECTION Gerald Ford (1913–2006) was briefly a lawyer before enlisng in the Navy in 1942. Aer the war, he began a 25-year congres- sional career followed by service as U.S. vice-president and then president.When he died, he lay in state in the Capitol rotunda. His statue replaced one of Zachariah Chandler, an an-slavery advocate who representedMichigan in the Senate. Gerald R. Ford, Jr. by J.
