The newly designed Federal Building and Courthouse has an elegantly simple exterior. DLR designed the space with the intent to exceed LEED® Silver certification requirements, and in doing so paid particular attention to the cladding materials se- lected to protect the public's investment. With the location, the sustainable goals and the public trust in mind, they elected to use a combination of Reynobond ACM and Reynobond with KEVLAR to enclose the façade. By selecting this pairing, they were able to achieve two goals: to gain LEED points from the high percentage of recycled aluminum used to manufacture Reynobond cladding materials, and to provide the added pro- tection of a high-performance building envelope constructed in compliance with the Miami-Dade building code. The Kistler McDougall Corp., Woodstock, GA, fabricated approximately 5,000 square feet of Reynobond with KEVLAR, 4 mm, with a PE core in Oyster White; and 8,000 square feet of Reynobond ACM, 4 mm, with a FR core in Oyster white for the façade. The Valentines LLC, Ft. Myers, FL, installed the Reynobond with KEVLAR on the soffit locations at areas below 30 feet; and installed the Reynobond ACM in wall and soffit locations above 30 feet. One element that made the installation less complicated was that plywood was not required to reinforce the Reynobond with KEVLAR panels. Skansa USA Building, Atlanta, GA, the general contractor on the project, is replacing all mechanical, electrical and plumb- ing systems and building back the interiors. The modernization also includes the installation of a rainwater collection system to provide water to flush the toilets and rooftop solar panels. When the retrofit is completed later this year, the GSA expects the structure to achieve a 41 percent gain in energy efficiency. Always Be Prepared In 2011, the National Weather Service (NWS) recorded the third busiest hurricane season in the Atlantic since it began recording them in 1851—tied with 1887, 1995 and 2010. At the 26th Annual Governor's Hurricane Conference held in Florida in May, Gov. Rick Scott spoke to emergency managers, city leaders and government agencies from across the state. His message to them was, "Regardless of the predictions, citizens need to be prepared for any storm that could potentially impact Florida."2 The National Weather Service has also found that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all hurricane and tornado disasters. And the damage can come in many forms, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, inland flooding, high winds, tornadoes and rip currents.3 The NWS fur- ther proposes that preventative actions can be taken to mit- igate the potential for damage by using building materials that STORM&SECURITY P R O T NEXT ISSUE: People in the Know INDUSTRY LEADERS IN STORM AND SECURITY PROTECTION STORM & SECURITY PROTECTION MAGAZINE • Advertising Rates • Editorial Schedules • Digital Edition Information Kerri Caldwell kcaldwell@kasnicmedia.com stormsecuritymag.com Publisher/National Sales (773) 775-9293 800-233-1144 | www.alutech.com 2012 FORECAST / STORM&SecURITy PROTecTION 19 E C T I O N INTRODUCING… Rolling Fabric Screens They aren't just for garages any more!
