BEST OF THE CARMEL POLICE LOG… Cat scan assist: A resident reported finding a friendly, thin, unfamiliar cat. Officer responded and found owner information via a microchip. The owner, who had lost the cat three months earlier, had also found a different cat the previous day. That cat was also scanned and returned. SHORTCUTS CARMEL CONFIDENTIAL MEar th and CUSD Honored for Being Green T he Monterey Bay Aquarium recognized Congressman Sam Farr's leadership in ocean conservation during a special reception in December. In addition to suppor ting National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) funding and programs, Congressman Farr advocated for the California Coastal National Monument and served as the founding co-chair of the bipartisan House Oceans Caucus. Aquarium leaders also honored Salinas school- teacher Stanley Wyman, an educator in the Santa Rita Union Elementary School District. He worked with the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Teacher Institute to expand a remotely operated vehicle- building class that engages students in data collection and environmen- tal science topics. Congressman Sam Farr's Ocean Advocacy D uring the 10th annual Green California Schools and Community Colleges Summit held in November, two local par tners were recognized for their unique approach to environmental education. MEar th and the Carmel Unified School District (CUSD) received a Green Schools Leadership Award for resource management work implemented at Hilton Bialek Habitat. The Carmel Valley proper ty invites students and community members to explore sustainability through a Leadership in Energy & Environmen- tal Design (LEED)-cer tified classroom outfitted with a living roof, energy-efficient appliances, passive solar design, a rainwater catchment sys- tem and other eco-friendly features. Hilton Bialek Habitat's 10 acres are also home to native plant habitats, edible gardens, grasslands and rare animals, birds and insects. CUSD and the nonprofit MEar th welcome more than 5,500 community members to Hilton Bialek Habitat each year. Two Monterey County breweries earned national honors during the 2016 Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Alvarado Street Brewery took home a silver medal for its Mai Tai P.A., a tropical India pale ale made with Mosaic hops. The same beer won a gold medal in the 2015 international-style pale ale catego- ry, as well. Alvarado Street operates a 10-barrel brewpub and restaurant in downtown Monterey and also opened a 20-barrel produc- tion brewhouse in Salinas in 2016. Monterey's Peter B's Brewpub earned a sil- ver medal in the American-style fruit beer class with Miss IPPA, a blend brewed with passion fruit and pineapple. Peter B's, par t of the Por tola Hotel & Spa since 1978, offers a full pub menu and rotating beer selection in down- town Monterey. GABF is the largest commercial beer com- petition in the world, recognizing entries across 96 style categories.
