The Arts Council for Monterey County recognized several individuals and organizations during its annual Champions of the Arts Gala in January. This year's celebration included dinner, live jazz, dancing and a silent auction, along with tributes to winners in several categories. Ar tists honored at the event include music educator Peggy Carroll, Melissa Chin-Parker of The Western Stage, and Richard Bains, who has chaired the music and performing ar ts depar tment at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) since the university opened in 1994. This year's lifetime achievement award went to Alan Silvestri. During more than three decades as a composer, he worked on the scores for some of Hollywood's most buzzed- about films—including "Forrest Gump," "Cast Away," "Back to the Future," "The Polar Express" and others. Silvestri and his family also operate Silvestri Vineyards in Carmel Valley. The Friends of the Monterey Public Library will present the 12th annual Monterey Chocolate and Wine Tasting on Friday, Feb. 17, from 7-9pm. The schedule includes live music, a chocolate and cake tasting, beer garden, silent auction and other festivities.
