For one of the most elegant dining ex-
periences in Toronto, consider ALO. Sit-
uated on the bustling corner of Queen
Street and Spadina Avenue, Alo bills
itself as a "destination for classically
prepared, meticulously thought out
French food and service" with a "no
nonsense" vibe. Patrick Kriss has cu-
rated a nine-course tasting menu that
on any given night can include Quebec
foie gras and sunchokes and seared
hamachi with chanterelle mushrooms.
No detail has been missed at this high-
end gem: In front is a cozy bar, appoint-
ed with a long, grey tufted leather ban-
quette overlooking the busy streets
below; the dining room, in the back, is
a jewel box pretty space with robin's
egg blue chairs, brass pendant lighting
and leather booths to match the bar.
Patrons choose their own napkin from
a selection of colors as to not get fuzz
on their clothing, but amazingly, the at-
mosphere is unpretentious. How can it
be when it's located on top of a 24-hour
burger joint?
