THE ART...
I have to confess that
over a dozen or so stays
at the hotel, I've never
been up to the second-floor
exhibition space, where their
"curated exhibit" lives. Not to
worry, says Carter.
"The art is everywhere. You
may not even know it when
you come in but even the
lightpost out on the sidewalk
is art." He's right; Totally In
Love, two intertwined lamp-
posts out in front of the hotel
was conceived by Dutch artist
Pieke Bergmans for an exhibi-
tion in Italy. (I'm ashamed to
say I had never noticed it.) "It's
not just the second floor from
the sidewalk to the entrance,
every aspect of going through
the hotel, your room, your hall-
way. Each guest floor features
a regional artist, and these dis-
plays rotate every year and a
half. The lower level first and
second floor is our curated ex-
hibit, and these change about
every year."
"That's what's really cool
about the 21c hotels," Carter
continued. "You keep coming
back and you're always going
to see new things. When we
change out the art, you're at a
whole new building."
